A MUDDLED MAN
a film by Tilly Upton

LET'S GET SOME PERSPECTIVE
Perspective is about a middle aged man, who when going through a crisis, loses touch with himself, reality and consequently his wife.

This film gives an insight into the lives and struggles of people who are not comfortable in who they are. In it we explore how difficult in can be to feel a disconnect between who you think you are inside and the person you present to the world.

This project is my debut film as a screenwriter, and my main hope and aspiration for Perspective is that it not only entertains but inspires audience members.

INSPIRATIONS
My main source of inspiration has been classic Hollywood films that have stood the test of time, most notably Citizen Cane.

This film, for me, is the perfect example of a narrative that goes in depth into what makes us who we are and how no one can ever fully understand everything a person is just by knowing them.

I've paid homage to this film by utilising the theme of reflection by including several mirrors in poignant moments.

PRE PRODUCTION
Perspective started when I watched a video about human kind and our social ques, I found it fascinating how much we assume and take for granted about one another when we hardly know each other at all.
I began by writing the script for Perspective which took approximately three months and included various trimmings and dramatic changes.
The first main change was to refocus the narrative around a first person basis, as originally the story was to be told by solely by the secondary characters. As this story was developed I felt as though the main character not only became more realistic but the story and script itself became more feasible and interesting.

After the script had been fully finished and vetted by colleagues, I moved on to focus on the cinematography that would be involved in the film. I worked alongside Tom Scarborough, a trusted colleague to ensure that the cinematography and style of the film could be visually achieved.

Then came all of the work and time spent securing locations as well as actors. This was the most time consuming part of the pre production as there were multiple locations needed and each one had to be specific to the script. Luckily I had a great producer who was determined that this wouldn't look like a "student film" by using all our contacts to add production value on a virtually non existent budget.

We then moved onto rehearsals which couldn't have gone any better. Every actor had spent a lot of time thinking about their character after our in-depth discussions about who they were. Even a scene that we were planning to completely improvise came together really nicely.
PRODUCTION
Once all of the pre production steps and planning were complete it was time to move on to filming the various scenes.

Unfortunately we had a few actors and locations fall through during the filming period. This meant it was quite a scramble to get everything together but we finally managed to complete filming at the beginning of April; with many thanks to everyone involved for pooling their resources to bring the film together.

The team working on this film were outstanding and helped to ensure each shoot day not only went smoothly but that we got all of the footage and aesthetics that were needed.

TILLY UPTON
Writer/Director

Perspective is my debut film for which I drew on personal experiences and general observations. I am inspired to write my films around the human psyche and what makes us who we are. My up-coming projects include a promotional campaign for the eco-fashion brand, Millican and 1st AD for Anton Lauret. I have also directed a situational comedy, Reunion, coming out later this year.
TOM SCARBOROUGH
Director of Photography

Tom is interested in all technical aspects of film production and how they work together to capture the message and narrative of the film. This made him the perfect cinematographer to work with as a trusted colleague I knew I'd work well with.
When we broke down the script Tom had a great understanding of what I was trying to portray in each scene and used his cinematography skills to capture the feelings of the characters at any given moment.

IOANNA TRIKERIOTI CHATZIIOANNOU
Producer

Ioanna's official role has been producer, for which she was passionate and hard-working from the start. She was amazing at finding and negotiating the best locations available, even securing a bus which I didn't think would be possible.
In actual fact I was extremely fortunate that she agreed to produce as her main interests lie in cinematography. This made her an excellent person to have on and during pre-production as she's got  a great eye for how the film will come together.
